Being in a multiracial country, I would say, we’ve been doing well keeping harmony in the country intact despite few idiotic incidents by imbeciles that might jeopardize the goodwill we have as part of the society. Is it true there is a barbarian in us that basically wants to eliminate dissimilarity in either tangible or something intangible like what we believe in? In normal circumstances, we behave well with our so-called civilized rational mindset until tantrum kicks in, awakening the monster in us and things will never be the same again. District 9 illustrated these remarkably well, showed how people welcome the aliens with an open arm because ‘the world is watching’ and eventually everybody wants to kick their ass fuck off.
This entry post didn’t lead me to the door of premiere of District 9 as I was invited to Ogawa’s event instead. I watched it not too long ago and since it’s almost end of the screening, I would like to share some of my thought about it. Generally, it’s a decent piece of work by Neill Blomkamp as director and Peter Jackson as producer, and I do like it.
D9 will definitely deceive you to think if you are watching a documentary or a sci-fi movie. Most of the scenes were purely shaking and as if someone was filming while walking or running except those super short interview sights. Some people might not take this well or might feel dizzy watching this. A friend of mine insisted not to watch even knowing it is a good film. I could take it but nowhere near liking the shaky parts. Again, would this film be as good if it’s not for the documentary style filming? You go figure it out.
The plot was created rather well. With astonishing CGI characters and scenes executed brilliantly, the whole story looked so real as if it really happened in Nigeria NOW. The creatures, referred as prawn were well developed and full of emotion too, making it so real. 90% of the screening involved Wikus (Sharlto Copley) whose act was no doubt top of the notch. His character development was nicely done with a lot of mentally challenged situations including gross scenes which will certainly disgusts many.
On top of all those credits, there were some unexplained areas which didn’t make much sense actually. First of all, why the main space craft ended up hanging on our sky and why those prawn almost die in there and how the space craft could have just activated and starts moving around again at the end of the movie? Why those prawns were not fighting the Nigerians with their powerful bio-mechanical weapons who kept bullied them but trade them over cat food? Might it be I was the only one who missed out some important information conveyed without me realizing it?
I have to say the story was kinda unique in a way. Not very sure if it’s one of the 1st of its kind. It is unquestionably one of the experience we have not come across for long. It demonstrated well the global hypocrisy in the world we face especially on what is right and wrong, legality vs morality etc. D9 is something really worth every penny you spend to the entertainment industries. Go watch it in big screen if you can take the wobbly screenshot.
